Colonel Phillip J. Deppert
Colonel Phil Deppert currently serves as the Army Department Chair at the Marine Corps War College, Quantico VA.
COL Deppert was commissioned an Infantry 2nd Lieutenant upon graduation from Ripon College, in Ripon, Wisconsin, and entered active duty in 1990. His initial assignment was with the 82d Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he served as a rifle platoon leader, 81mm mortar platoon leader, Assistant Battalion Operations Officer, and as a rifle company Executive Officer.
Transitioning to the Military Intelligence Corps in 1994, he next served as a Battalion Intelligence Officer (S-2) for the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, in the Republic of Korea. Returning to the United States, he was assigned to the 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, from 1995-1998, where he served as the Group Military Intelligence Detachment Commander and Group Senior Intelligence Officer (S2). After his 3rd Special Forces Group assignment, Col. Deppert transferred to another Special Operations assignment where he directly supported the Geographic Combatant Commanders’ worldwide contingency planning tasks. After completing Command and General Staff College, he served as the Chief, Division Analysis and Control Element, and Military Intelligence Battalion Operations Officer (S3), for the U.S. Army’s 25th Infantry Division from 2003-2005; he deployed with the division to Afghanistan from 2004-2005.
Upon redeployment from Afghanistan, COL Deppert was assigned to Headquarters, U.S. Special Operations Command. From 2005-2008 he served as the Special Analysis Branch Chief and then selected as the first Director of Intelligence for the U.S. Special Operations Command Interagency Task Force (IATF), where he directly coordinated with multiple U.S. government agencies on a variety of counterterrorism missions around the world. After serving with the USSOCOM IATF, he was then selected as the Executive Officer to the Director for the USSOCOM Center for Special Operations; ensuring the Director’s guidance was disseminated and the staff synchronized across the Intelligence, Operations and Plans directorates.
After his USSOCOM assignment, COL Deppert served as the U.S. Army’s 4th Infantry Division Senior Intelligence Officer (G2), from 2008-2011; to include service in Iraq during Operations Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn. Upon redeployment, he served on the U.S. Northern Command Directorate of Intelligence staff, as the Deputy Mission Manager for Mexico. After his assignment at USNORTHCOM, he completed the U.S. Navy War College, earning a Master of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. After completing the War College, Col. Deppert served as the Chief of Staff and Deputy Commander of Joint Task Force North. He most recently served as the Commandant of the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center from 2015-2018.
COL Deppert holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science, a Master of Business Administration in Management and a Masters of National Security and Strategic Studies.
