Captain Miller was raised in New Bern, NC and Enumclaw, WA and calls Mobile, AL home. He attended the California Maritime Academy, graduating with a BS in Business Administration and his U.S. Coast Guard license as Third Mate, Steam or Motor Vessels of Any Gross Tonnage upon Oceans. He was commissioned through the Merchant Marine Reserve program in 2000.
 
Afloat, Captain Miller served as Communications Officer, CIC Officer and Training Officer in USS COMSTOCK (LSD 45); Plankowner Combat Systems Officer in USS NEW ORLEANS (LPD 18); Operations Officer in USS CLEVELAND (LPD 7); Flag Secretary to Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group THREE; Executive Officer and Commanding Officer in USS PEARL HARBOR (LSD 52); and Chief Staff Officer at Amphibious Squadron THREE.
 
Ashore, Captain Miller earned his MA in National Security and Strategic Studies at the U.S. Naval War College; served as a staff operations and plans officer and exercise mentor at Tactical Training Group Atlantic; and then on the staff of the International Programs department at the Naval War College. He has directed the Joint Warfare course and is currently serving as the Deputy Director and Navy Chair at the Marine Corps War College, a college of the Marine Corps University in Quantico, VA.
 
Captain Miller’s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various other unit and personal decorations.
