Lieutenant Colonel William W. Johnson
LtCol Johnson enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserves in March of 1987. Upon completion of Boot Camp and the School of Infantry he was assigned to Alpha Company, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, San Antonio, TX. While assigned to Alpha Company he served in multiple billets from radio operator through Platoon Sergeant and was commissioned through OCC in 1995. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from Texas A&M University and Master’s Degrees in Security Management from Webster University, Security Studies from Angelo State University, Military Art and Science from the School of Advanced Military Studies and is currently pursuing a MS in Information Assurance and Security from Sam Houston State University. He is a resident graduate of Amphibious Warfare School, USA Command and General Staff College, USA School of Advanced Military Studies, the Weapons and Tactics Instructor’s Course and the US Army’s Red Team Member Course.
After completion of the Air Defense Officers Course, Ft Bliss, TX LtCol Johnson was assigned to 2nd Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion (LAAD). While at 2nd LAAD he served as a Platoon Commander, including a MEU Deployment, as a Battery Executive Officer and as the Assistant Operations Officer. His last billet with the Battalion was as the Commanding Officer of Bravo Battery. Post Battery Command he was selected to attend Amphibious Warfare School and subsequently received orders to 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion (LAR) as the Commander of the LAV- Air Defense Platoon. This assignment included deploying ISO OIF I with 1st LAR where he had sections with each active LAR Battalion as well as serving as the Battalion’s Assistant Air Officer.
Upon return from OIF I he decommissioned LAV-AD and was assigned as the Assistant Operations Officer for 3rd LAAD Battalion. While with 3rd LAAD he deployed ISO OIF II as the Operations Officer for the 3rd MAW Provisional Security Battalion aboard Al Asad Air Base, Iraq.
After completion of his OIF II deployment he was transferred to MARDET, Ft Leavenworth, KS to attend the US Army’s Command and General Staff College and was subsequently selected for the School of Advanced Military Studies.
LtCol Johnson received orders to III MEF upon completion of school and served as the G-3 Korea Planner and then the Northeast Asia Lead Planner for III MEF followed by duties as the Executive Officer of MTACS-18.
Upon completion of his tour in Okinawa LtCol Johnson was assigned to the MAGTF Staff Training Program (MSTP) as the Operational Planner and Command Element Section Head. While at MSTP he was assigned TAD to 1st Marine Division (Task Force Leatherneck), Future Operations, Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan.
In 2012 he was transferred to Marine Corps University spending one year as a member of the Military Faculty at Command and Staff College and three years as the Operations Officer for the School of Advanced Warfighting.
On 24 August, 2016, LtCol Johnson took command of Marine Air Support Squadron 3. Upon completion of command LtCol Johnson received orders to his current assignment as the Operations Officer for the School of Advanced Warfighting.
