Lieutenant Colonel James S. Smolucha, a native of Winfield, Illinois, was commissioned in March 2007 upon completing Officer Candidate School. Following initial training as an Infantry Officer, he was assigned to 2d Battalion, 9th Marines, serving as a Rifle Platoon Commander in Ramadi, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He subsequently served as Weapons Platoon Commander, Executive Officer, and Marine Advisor in Marjah, Afghanistan, during Operation Enduring Freedom.
In 2011, Captain Smolucha reported to Marine Combat Training Battalion, School of Infantry–East, where he commanded Hotel Company and served as Officer-in-Charge of the Instructor Group. After graduating on the Commandant’s List from the U.S. Army Maneuver Captain’s Career Course in 2015, he joined 1st Battalion, 6th Marines. There, he commanded Headquarters and Service Company and Weapons Company, deploying with the 22d Marine Expeditionary Unit supporting Operation Odyssey Lightning.
From 2017 to 2020, Major Smolucha served as Inspector-Instructor, Golf Company, 2d Battalion, 24th Marines, during which time he graduated as a Distinguished Graduate from the Marine Corps Command and Staff College Distance Education Program and earned a master’s degree in international relations from New England College. He then served as Operations Officer at the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center, earning certifications as a Summer and Winter Mountain Leader.
In June 2022, Lieutenant Colonel Smolucha joined 3d Marine Division in Okinawa, Japan, serving as G-3 Future Operations Officer and J-35 on its Joint Task Force. He then reported to the 12th Marine Littoral Regiment, notably as a plank holder, serving as the Operations Officer and Executive Officer. In July 2026, he assumed his current duties as a Faculty Advisor at the Marine Corps University’s Command and Staff College.
