Colonel Daniel M. Murphy is Chief of Staff, Education Command and Marine Corps University.
He graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 2000 with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and was commissioned in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Colonel Murphy is a graduate of The Basic School (H), Naval Aviation Flight School (H), Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course (H), USMC Command and Staff College (H), USMC School of Advanced Warfighting, Joint and Combined Warfighting School, and Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies as part of the Secretary of Defense’s Strategic Thinkers Program.
He is a Naval Aviator with over 2,300 flight hours in the CH-53E Super Stallion. Flying assignments include tours with HMH-461, HMH-366, HMH-361, HMH-464, and HMH-772. He also commanded Marine Corps Air Facility Quantico (home of HMX-1 Presidential Helicopter Squadron).
His deployments include five flying tours to CJTF-Horn of Africa, Djibouti; Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, Iraq; and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, Afghanistan. Additionally, he served as Chief of Operations (CJ-33) for Operation INHERENT RESOLVE and concurrently as U.S. Forces Iraq and Syria Future Operations Officer (J-35).
CONUS staff assignments include service as Rotary Wing Action Officer, 2d MAW; Future Operations Officer, MAG-29; and Operations Officer, Special Operations Training Group, II MEF. He also served on the Joint Staff J-5 Directorate as the Global Posture and Global Integration Branch Chief. Prior to his current assignment, he was Chief of Plans, War Plans Division, J-5, U.S. European Command.
His awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with one Gold Star, Air Medal (Individual Action), Air Medal (Strike/Flight Award) with bronze numeral 6, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with one Gold Star, Joint Service Achievement Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
