Major Zimmerman was commissioned in 2014 upon graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy. After completing The Basic School and the Infantry Officers Course, he was assigned as the Platoon Commander for Combined Anti-Armor Team (CAAT), Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines.
In 2017, he deployed with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (15th MEU). During the deployment he held the additional billet of Weapons Company Executive Officer.
Upon returning from deployment, Major Zimmerman served as the 81mm Mortar Platoon Commander and 5th Marines Training Officer.
In 2019, he reported to the U.S. Naval Academy for the LEAD Master’s Program. He earned a Master of Arts Degree in Leadership Education and Development from the George Washington University in May 2020, and served as the 17th Company Officer, Leadership Instructor, and Men's Lacrosse Team Officer Representative at the U.S. Naval Academy.
Major Zimmerman reported to 3d Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment in July 2022 as the Company I, Company Commander. As a Company Commander, he deployed to Okinawa for Unit Deployment Program - Hawaii 23.2. And while deployed, he served as the Ground Force Commander for the Alert Contingency MAGTF First Echelon Company and as the Officer in Charge for Exercise Fuji Viper 23.4.
Upon returning from deployment in December 2023, Major Zimmerman assumed the role of Operations Officer for 3d Battalion, 5th Marines.
In July 2025 Major Zimmerman reported to the Expeditionary Warfare School to serve as a Military Faculty Advisor.
He is a recipient of the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal.
