Biography

Expeditionary Warfare School
Major Austin S. Pile, USMC

Major Austin Pile graduated from the University of Arizona with a B.A. in Political Science with an emphasis in Law. He commissioned in May 2015 and subsequently completed The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia, followed by the Field Artillery Basic Officer Leader Course and Joint Fires Observer Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Major Pile’s first assignment was with 3d Battalion, 11th Marines, where he served in the Fire Support Coordination Center as a Fire Support Officer and Motor Transportation Officer, later becoming the Assistant Executive Officer for Kilo Battery. He then served as a Company Fire Support Officer with 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, deploying to the CENTCOM area of operations. During this deployment, he held multiple billets, including Rifle Platoon Commander and Company Executive Officer for Company G, and served as the primary Joint Fires Observer for Task Force Lion in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

Following deployment, he returned to 3d Battalion, 11th Marines, serving as Executive Officer for Battery I and Headquarters Battery before reporting to The Basic School in July 2019. There, he served as a Warfighting Instructor, Staff Platoon Commander, and Company Executive Officer.

In July 2023, Major Pile attended Expeditionary Warfare School, graduating as an honor graduate and serving as student lead for the Artillery Occupational Field Expansion Course. Upon graduation, he assumed command of Fox Battery, 2d Battalion, 11th Marines—the Marine Corps’ NMESIS experimentation unit—contributing to Force Design 2030 initiatives. In May 2024, he became the Assistant Regimental Operations Officer for 11th Marines and was later selected for faculty duty at Expeditionary Warfare School. He is now the Military Faculty Advisor for Conference Group 6.

His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (gold star) and Achievement Medal (gold star).
