Biography

School of Advanced Warfighting
Benjamin M. Jensen, Ph.D., Colonel, USAR

Dr. Jensen is the Frank E. Petersen Chair for Emerging and Disruptive Technology and a Professor of Strategic Studies at the School of Advanced Warfighting (SAW). At SAW, he runs the Future War Research Program and directs the Changing Character of Conflict course. He founded the Gray Scholars Program and served as the inaugural Donald Bren Chair, helping to establish the CMC Strategist Program. Dr. Jensen is also the recipient of a Commandant of the Marine Corps Innovation Award.

Outside of Marine Corps University, Dr. Jensen is the Director of the CSIS Futures Lab, where he leads research teams embracing data science, artificial intelligence/machine learning and alternative analysis (red teaming) to revolutionize policy-driven research. At CSIS, his team has led multiple, pioneering benchmarking AI models and integrating AI agents into tabletop exercises and wargames.

Separately, he has supported multiple government research efforts on the future of strategic competition, military modernization and warfighting. He has extensive experience supporting Congress, the DoD, NATO, USAID and the State Department, primarily with wargaming, red teaming and alternative analysis. Notably, he was the Executive Director for the National Commission on the Future of the Navy, the Senior Research Director and lead author for the U.S. Cyberspace Solarium Commission and has advised organizations like DARPA, the Joint Staff, Army Futures Command, Marine Corps Warfighting Lab, the Russia Strategic Initiative (RSI), Strategic Multilayered Assessment (SMA) and multiple combatant commands.

Dr. Jensen is the author of five books including Information in War (Georgetown University Press), Forging the Sword (Stanford), Military Strategy in the 21st Century (Cambria) and Cyber Strategy (Oxford). He publishes frequently at CSIS and War on the Rocks and has written opinion pieces for numerous major media outlets.

Dr. Jensen is a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve and has commanded from the platoon to battalion level.
