Biography

School of Advanced Warfighting
Benjamin M. Jensen, Ph.D.

Dr. Jensen is both a Professor of Strategic Studies at the School of Advanced Warfighting (SAW) and a Scholar-in-Residence at American University, School of International Service. He is also a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council.

At SAW, he runs the Future War Research Program and directs the Changing Character of Conflict course. He founded the Gray Scholars Program and served as the inaugural Donald Bren Chair, helping to establish the CMC Strategist Program. And, he received a Commandant of the Marine Corps Innovation Award.

Dr. Jensen supports the Army with research on the future of strategic competition, military modernization, and warfighting. He has extensive experience supporting Congress, the DoD, NATO, USAID, and the State Department, primarily with war gaming, red teaming, and alternative analysis. Notably, he was the Senior Research Director for the U.S. Cyberspace Solarium Commission and has advised organizations like DARPA, the Russia Strategic Initiative (SMA), Strategic Multilayered Assessment (SMA) effort on the Joint Staff, and the Office of Net Assessment.

A prolific author on strategy and political violence, his works include Forging the Sword (Stanford), Military Strategy in the 21st Century (Cambria), and Cyber Strategy (Oxford). He publishes a column at War on the Rocks and has written opinion pieces for numerous major media outlets.

His research has been funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York, Charles Koch Foundation, Office of Naval Research, Hewlett Foundation, Smith Richardson Foundation, and the DoD Minerva Initiative.

He is an Army Reserve officer and member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Political Science Association, and International Studies Association.
