Colonel Winthrop is currently serving as the Director, Marine Corps Command and Staff College at the Marine Corps University in Quantico, Virginia. He graduated from the Ohio State University in 1991 and was commissioned in 1995 as a Combat Engineer Officer. He has served in 2d Combat Engineer Battalion, 2d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Battalion Landing Team 2/2, 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, 7th Engineer Support Battalion, RCT-1, 1st MLG and I MEF. Command billets include 1st Combat Engineer Battalion and Headquarters & Service Battalion, Headquarters Marine Corps, Henderson Hall. He has completed eight operational deployments including three combat tours to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom and two in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. Staff tours include I MEF G-5 Chief of Plans, Deputy G-3 for 1st MARDIV, a tour at Office of the Secretary of Defense, Director of Current Operations at CD&I and Branch Head, Futures Branch for DC, I&L. Resident PME includes the Amphibious Warfare School, Marine Corps Command and Staff College, School of Advanced Warfighting and the National War College.
His personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with gold star in lieu of second award, the Bronze Star Medal with gold star in lieu of second award, Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, and Marine Corps Engineer Association’s Combat Engineer Officer of the Year Award for 2004.
