Scott graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1987 with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and was commissioned into the U.S. Marine Corps. Over his distinguished career, he served as a logistics officer in various staff and command positions, ranging from platoon to regimental levels. He also served as a Russian Foreign Area Officer (FAO).
Throughout his career, Scott was assigned to commands in Jacksonville, North Carolina; Quantico, Virginia; Monterey, California; Garmisch, Germany; Kiev, Ukraine; Newport, Rhode Island; Okinawa, Japan; and Washington, D.C. He participated in numerous overseas exercises and deployments across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, including two combat deployments to Iraq. As a Russian FAO, he served in Ukraine and Moldova. His assignments covered logistics, intelligence, training, education, and leader development.
Scott retired from the Marine Corps in October 2017. He currently serves as the Dean of Academics at the College of Distance Education and Training, Marine Corps University, in Quantico, Virginia. He has published two articles on naval expeditionary operations and co-teaches a leadership elective at the Marine Corps Command and Staff College in the winter.
He is a recipient of various individual and unit awards and is a graduate of the Command and Control Systems Course, the Marine Corps Command and Staff College (non-resident course), and the U.S. Naval War College.
