Dr. James Joyner is a Professor of Security Studies at the Command and Staff College, Marine Corps University. He has been a member of the faculty since August 2013 and served as Security Studies Department Head from July 2019-June 2024.
He has published more than 200 public policy articles for outlets including The New York Times, Foreign Policy, The Atlantic, The New Republic, War on the Rocks, The National Interest, Defense One, Christian Science Monitor, The Hill, CNN, NPR, Defense News, World Politics Review, Politico, Reason, and Legal Affairs.
He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Alabama and has previously held faculty positions at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Bainbridge College, and Troy State University. He has also served as managing editor of the Atlantic Council, a Washington DC think tank, and of Strategic Insights, the professional journal of the Center for Contemporary Conflict at the Naval Postgraduate School.
He is a former U.S. Army Field Artillery officer and veteran of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and numerous service medals and ribbons and is a graduate of the Airborne and Air Assault schools.
