Lieutenant Matthew D. Esper is currently assigned to the USMC Expeditionary Warfare School as a Naval Science
Instructor.
Originally from Carlisle, PA he enlisted in the Navy in August of 2002. After completing basic training at Recruit Training
Command, he was assigned to the Navy Ceremonial Guard. He continued his enlisted career as a Hospital Corpsman,
achieving the rank of Chief Hospital Corpsman, and served on a multitude of operational platforms, to include the Fleet
Marine Force, Naval Special Warfare and with an Expeditionary Medical Facility. He earned his Enlisted Fleet Marine
Force, Information Warfare, and Expeditionary Warfare qualifications. He completed two combat deployments to
Afghanistan, one operational deployment to the Horn of Africa, and one humanitarian deployment on the USNS Comfort.
In 2018, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the Navy Medical Service Corps and reported to Officer
Development School in Newport, RI. Upon completion, he was assigned to II Marine Expeditionary Force as the Force
Medical Planner. During that time he was promoted to Lieutenant and earned his Fleet Marine Force Warfare Officer
qualification. In 2020, he reported to 2d Marine Division as the Deputy Division Surgeon and Medical Planner. During this
time, he deployed to 6th Fleet standing up Task Force 61/2 where he served as Director, Health Service Support.
LT Esper holds a Master of Public Administration degree and Bachelor of Healthcare Management degree. He has
completed numerous joint and service medical planning schools and most recently graduated the Navy Amphibious
Warfare Tactics Instructor Course. His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (2nd award), Joint Service
Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3rd award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement
Medal (7th award), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and various other service and campaign medals.
