RESULTS
COS: These are the COAs that were selected by the Commander for wargaming.
OPERATION BARBARY SWORD (COA 2) NARRATIVE
COA 2
On order, II MEF defeats enemy forces in zone in order to restore Tunisia’s international border with Libya. Be prepared to transition to Stability Operations in Tunisia.
Stage A: Pre D-Day
Purpose: Make preparations to commence offensive operations shaping operations.
DEEP Operations:
ACE (main effort)
T1: Performs intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.
P1: Battlespace assessment.
(MEF coordinates all IO efforts with CJTF.)
CLOSE Operations:
1AD, 2MARDIV, and Tunisian brigade ground units (supporting efforts 1, 2, and 3 respectively)
T1: Defend along the DMZ
P1: Safeguard further Libyan penetration into Tunisia.
(MEF commences planning with NAVFOR’s amphib 2MEB for pending offensive amphib operations.)
REAR Operations:
MLG (supporting effort 4) T1: Secure LOCs
P1: Sustainment of offensive combat operations preparations.
T2: Pre-stage all classes of supply
P2: Sustainment of offensive combat operations preparations.
T3: Establish EPW/IDP facilities IVO SFAX.
P3: Sustainment of offensive combat operations preparations.
Endstate: Ample combat power postured to commence shaping ops.
Stage B: Shaping Ops
Purpose: Deplete and demoralize enemy before D-day.
DEEP Operations:
ACE (main effort)
T1: neutralize C2, arty, and WOG concentrations north of PL BLUE( 34 deg 30 min latitude).
P1: To improve relative combat power force ratios before crossing line of departure.
CLOSE Operations:
1AD, 2MARDIV, and Tunisian brigades (supporting efforts 1, 2, and 3 respectively)
T1: Prepare to attack in zone.
P1: To begin ground offensive operations.
2MEB (supporting effort 4)
T1: Concurrently, prepare to conduct an amphibious assault IVO Gabes.
P1: To establish a blocking position oriented north.
REAR Operations:
MLG (supporting effort 5)
T1: Continues to secure LOCs.
T2: Posture to support MEF attack.
T3: Mobile logistic combat units prepare to provide direct support to maneuver elements.
P1-3: Posture to sustain offensive combat ops.
TCF mechanized BN (supporting effort 6)
T1: BPT defeat rear area threats.
P1: To ensure freedom of sustainment.
Endstate: WOG frontline units severely attritted and C2 disrupted. MEF postured for attack south.
STAGE C: Decisive Operations
Purpose: Defeat and expel enemy from GoT.
DEEP Operations:
ACE (supporting effort 1)
T1: Defeat C2, ADA, armor, troop concentrations
P1: To expedite movement of ground forces.
T2: Conduct armed recce along LOCs..
P2: To keep LOCs open.
CLOSE Operations:
1AD (main effort)
T1: Attack south in zone secure MEF Objective 1.
P1: To secure Mezzouna Oilfield.
T2: Continue attack to PL BLUE.
P2: To continue to defeat and dislodge enemy. 2MARDIV and Tunisian brigades (supporting effort 2 and 3 respectively)
T1: Follow in support, clearing bypassed forces and prepare to conduct FPOL with the ME at PL BLUE.
P1: To sustain expulsion of the enemy while pushing forward.
2MEB (supporting effort 4)
T1: Conduct an amphibious assault IVO Gabes and establish blocking position oriented north.
P1: To isolate and destroy the WOG 1st Echelon.
REAR Operations:
MLG (supporting effort 5)
T1: Secure LOCs and conduct resupply IVO PL BLUE.
P1: Perform forward sustainment ops.
Endstate: Mezzouna Oilfield secure, 2MARDIV prepared to conduct FPOL through 1AD and continue attack south.
Stage D: Forward Passage of Lines
Purpose: To continue offensive ops to border.
DEEP Operations:
ACE (supporting effort 1)
T1: Defeat C2 and ADA.
P1: To expedite WOG retreat.
T2: Interdict withdraw of enemy forces along LOCs.
P2: To attrite WOG before crossing the border.
CLOSE Operations:
2MARDIV (main effort)
T1: Conduct a FPOL with 1AD and then continue to attack south in zone.
P1: To defeat enemy forces IVO MEF OBJs 2 (Gabes), 3 (Medenine), 4 (Ben Guerdane).
T2: Advance to the Libyan border.
P2: IOT re-establish Tunisian border.
1AD (supporting effort 2)
T1: Conduct resupply IVO Gabes.
P2: To rearm and refuel.
T1: Follows in support to Libyan border.
P2: To clear bypassed forces.
2MEB (supporting effort 3)
T1: Consolidate IVO Gabes.
P1: To reinforce possible attack into Libya.
REAR Operations:
MLG (supporting effort 4)
T1: Establish FLB IVO Gabes.
P1: To sustain force south.
T2: Continue security of LOCs.
P2: To ensure freedom of sustainment.
Endstate: Border re-established; all forces prepared to continue attack into Libya.
