Colonel James R. Fullwood, Jr.


Colonel Fullwood was commissioned on 9 May 1992. After graduating from The Basic School and Infantry Officers Course, Colonel Fullwood reported to 2d Battalion, 7th Marines where he served as a platoon commander and company executive officer.  

In May 1995, he was reassigned to the School of Infantry (East) at Camp Lejeune, N.C., where he served consecutively as a company commander for Marine Combat Training Battalion, Infantry Training Battalion, and Advanced Infantry Training Company. 

In January 1999, after completing Armored Officers Career Course, Colonel Fullwood joined 2d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion where he served as a company commander for Alpha, Bravo, and Weapons Companies.   Upon departing 2d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Colonel Fullwood was assigned as the InspectorInstructor for Delta Company, 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion at Quantico, VA.  During his tour as an Inspector-Instructor, he mobilized his reserve company and deployed in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM I.

Reassigned to Marine Corps University for Intermediate Level School, Colonel Fullwood graduated from Marine Corps Command and Staff College and the School of Advanced Warfighting.  Following school, he was assigned to the Command Element of III Marine Expeditionary Force where he served as the G-3 Deputy Current Operations Officer and the G-3 Current Operations Officer.  During his tour at III MEF, he deployed in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM where he served as a Plans Team Leader at MultiNational Forces-Iraq.

In June 2009, Colonel Fullwood assumed command of 2d Battalion, 9th Marines and deployed with his battalion to Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.  Upon redeployment, he transferred to Camp Pendleton, California where he assumed duties as the Commanding Officer of Wounded Warrior Battalion-West in June 2011.  After relinquishing command in 2013, Colonel Fullwood was reassigned to Marine Corps University for Top Level School at the Marine Corps War College. 

Following school, Colonel Fullwood served as Commanding Officer, Combined Arms Training Center, Camp Fuji, Japan from June 2014 until June 2015. He also served as the Plans Division Chief, ECJ-5/8, U.S. European Command from August 2015 to June 2018. Colonel Fullwood assumed his current duties as Director at the School of Advanced Warfighting in July 2018.
